I want to offer six words as stimuli for an ongoing reflection on pedagogical leadership in the contemporary world.
The first three suggest a broad strategic orientation; the second three are operational.
1. Precision
This suggests a clear (or precise) understanding of purpose and intention on the part of the leader. It provokes questions: Where do we want to go – and why? What will help us get there? How will we determine our degree of progress?
2. Curiosity
Only curious leaders tend to ask such questions of themselves and others. These leaders are not simply efficient implementers or coordinators of activities. They lead others in thinking new thoughts, in imagining what yet might be.
3. Velocity
Effective leadership requires action. In today’s changing context, it requires quick and resolute action. But this must be considered action in a particular direction, never frantic or random. ‘Velocity’ – speed in a given direction – catches this idea.
4. Radical
The genuinely radical leader is not just a lover of novelty. He or she goes back to the roots, maintains essential continuity, but is then prepared to push the boundaries and even work outside the square. Such a leader takes the process of re-imagining to its logical end – transformation.
5. Relentless
Relentless leaders persist with core tasks. They have high expectations of themselves and others. They persevere in the task of transforming.
6. Resilient
Things don’t always go according to plan, even with the plan is relentlessly pursued. Resilient leaders accept difficulties and then adapt, coming back to the task from new and fresh angles. In all of it, however, they maintain integrity and transcend mere pragmatism.
What specific challenges might come to mind when pedagogical leaders reflect on these six keywords?
