‘We educate the whole person.’
The statement becomes clichéd after so many repetitions. But it is foundational nevertheless.
Authentic Catholic education must engage the whole person – the heart, the head and the spirit. Reasoning is highly respected; so is the imagination; and so are all the physical competencies which we use in everyday life.
The valued outcomes of our curriculum are not just academic results – important though these are. Our curriculum nurtures a social consciousness; it stimulates an interest and competence in cultural and sporting pursuits; it fosters creative expression and it links students to the stories of the human race in all its diversity.
Above all, it enlivens their spirit and guides their search for personal meaning.
This is our understanding of holistic education which is served by a truly balanced curriculum.
How well is our curriculum balanced? Do certain aspects ‘fall off the edge’ under the pressure of time? Do we need to make adjustments from time to time?
