Quality relationships have long been seen as being a distinguishing feature of good schools.
When we talk about the teacher’s great contribution to a student’s learning outcomes, it is understood that this largely refers to the teacher’s ability to relate supportively and professionally to students.
This relational aspect of education fits very readily within our Catholic educational philosophy. Raw self-interest and individualism are not part of authentic Catholic educational culture where a student’s identity is nurtured within community.
We are responsible for each other, so that our curriculum has both a local and a global dimension. Co-operative learning, programs of that focus on social justice, strategies that cater for diversity, and that promote tolerance and understanding – all reflect a deeper understanding of what it means to be fully human.
Which particular pedagogies do you see as reflecting the value we place on the relational aspect of Catholic education?
