Good teachers have always been around. And good educational theorists have always proclaimed good educational principles.
In the past, however, none of them could apply their wisdom and experience within virtual space. Today we have the tools to make this application.
And what powerful tools they are! The new social technologies are already part of the everyday life of our students. They are servicing an invaluable form of learning which is both social and relational.
These social technologies not only underlie the need for curriculum change, they actually provide ways of achieving it.
They enable students to master new ways of connecting with people, ideas, knowledge and networks. They offer new ways of building community and enhancing networks which extend well beyond classroom walls.
Education both in and by means of these technologies is already making a significant contribution to lifelong learning in that it provides skills and understandings which will be dramatically extended long after school days are over.
